EC Vancouver Teacher Spotlight: Denise Dalton

Background information:

I’m Irish and I moved to Vancouver 6 years ago. I really love this city and have been teaching at EC for nearly 5 years now.

Years spent teaching:

I taught in Ireland for 6 years and her for 5 so almost 11 years altogether. I also worked at various different jobs including being a Lawyer and being an advocate for minority groups.

What made you decide to become a teacher?

I love being in a job that is varied and flexible and I am passionate about teaching languages. I also teach Irish here in Vancouver. I love watching my students blossom and becoming relaxed and free in their use of English.

What’s the thing you love most about teaching English at EC?

It’s fun! We have a great team here and really support each other. I also have a degree of autonomy which I embrace fully. I feel at EC Vancouver we offer a professional service and really care about our students.

What makes teaching at EC so special?

I guess meeting students from all over the world and working in a supportive environment.

What’s one thing you’ve learned from a student that really stands out?

That each day is special!

What is your favourite story about a student/teaching?

When my students make me laugh. For example I asked an elementary class what the word NEWS meant. One girl replied North, South, East, West as that’s what she learned from a teacher in Japan!

What do you think makes a good teacher?

  • Being prepared

  • Being flexible

  • Letting students do the work
